July 14, 2017, New York, NY--Doing / Living presents Brooklyn artist Meghan Keane, a painter and printmaker known for her peripatetic approach to making art. The through line of much of her work is a fascination with the intimate, vulnerable, and vital in life. Most recently this has emerged in her artistic practice as painting portraits by traveling to her subjects, bringing the studio experience into the homes of friends and strangers.
Keane's installation created during her time as Artist In Residence [seen above] is titled What Is More Feminine Than The X.
Her installation consists of meditatively painted Xs, in pink and red hues, legible from both sides of the muslin fabric on which it is painted. Created on site, her new, enveloping and inhabitable work has a cross-stitched, sewn-painting quality as well as an ode to the X chromosome character.
The portraits of women on view at Doing / Living are from Keane's Monochrome series. Keane's approach to painting people is a conscious act of rendering the previously less seen, visible, and often erased or sidelined, immortal.
Keane was inspired to exhibit this selection of paintings at Doing / Living after reading a Facebook post by American writer, Rebecca Solnit:
“Some women get erased a little at a time, some all at once. Some reappear. Every woman who appears wrestles with the forces that would have her disappear. She struggles with the forces that would tell her story for her, or write her out of the story, the genealogy, the rights of man, the rule of law.
The ability to tell your own story, in words or images, is already a victory, already a revolt.” [excerpted from her post]
